Every hour a baby is born with cerebral palsy, making it the most common lifelong physical disability. The Surgical Skills Building Mentorship in Theatre will be held at Kiaat Private Hospital and Rob Ferreira Public Hospital for 8 children with Cerebral Palsy and 8 Medical Doctor Mentees.

About the event

2023 Annual Paediatric Symposium: Making Connections Between Disciplines, Clinicians, Government and Private Sector to Advance Interdisciplinary Care for Early Detection and Treatment for Infants and Children with or at High-Risk for Cerebral Palsy.

Every hour a baby is born with cerebral palsy, the worldwide incidence of cerebral palsy is 1 in 500 births and there are currently 18 million people in the world who have cerebral palsy making cerebral palsy the most common lifelong physical disability. There is no cure for cerebral palsy, but supportive treatments, medications, and surgery can help many individuals improve their motor skills and ability to communicate with the world. This skills building program aims to:

  • Live Paediatric Surgical Skills and Demonstration for 8 pro-bono CP Cases
  • Provide HCWs with a skill building program for the treatment of children with Cerebral Palsy.

Course design

Surgical Skills Building Workshop, mentorship in Theatre to be held at Kiaat Private Hospital and Rob Ferreira Public Hospital, Mbombela. Mpumalanga

Date: 20-21 April 2023

Priority Skills:

  • LaparoscopicNissenfundoplication,
  • Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG,Placement of a feeding tube)
  • LaparoscopicassistedGastrostomy
  • Manometry
  • Post-opCare

Fees

  • Limited to 8 Medical Officers/Registers for live training in theatre @ fee R2000.00/person for the full 4 day program (includes registration for 2 day didactic symposium scheduled for 27-28 May 2023)

Who should enrol?

  • In-Theatre Mentorship: Limited to Medical Officers, Registers and Surgeons registered with the relevant professional council, 

Certification:

To qualify for the certificate of completion for this program, participants should fully attend the symposium fully as well as successfully complete the assessment process.

    This ticket includes access to the Surgical Skills Building mentorship in theatre for 8 theatre cases focusing on Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication, Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy(PEG), Laparoscopic assisted Gastrostomy, Manometry and Post-op Care. In-person mentorship limited to 8 medical doctors. The Session will be held on the 20 - 21 April, 08:00 - 17:00.
